SS United States Online Petition Launched
March 13, 2009 – In an effort to bring the plight of our nation’s flagship to the attention of President Obama and members of Congress, the Conservancy has started a new online petition which we hope will become part of a viral “Save Our Ship” campaign on the internet. Please take a moment to read and sign the petition, one signature per supporter, and then please forward to all of your friends, family, and online contacts via email and through your various social networking sites such as FaceBook, MySpace, Twitter, etc. It only takes a few seconds and it’s just one of many ways you can help save this irreplaceable national treasure. NOTE: Please be careful that you only sign the petition once. Take a moment and sign it now!
March 15, 2009 – Important Update! It’s been brought to our attention that when you sign the iPetition, you’ll see a link to “Donate.” Please note that this is a link to donate to iPetitions (a free service) and not a link to donate to the cause to Save the SS United States.

SAVE THE UNITED STATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THIS IS OUR HISTORY THIS SHOULD BE SAVED FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS TO SEE.
I am not so sure it is viable to save her. The costs of any type of salvation is so prohibitive.
Wake up America, How much more of what has made this nation so great must pass away before our eyes before we see the error. This great ship deserves so much more that the fate that awaits her. This will be a blemish on the honor that we as Americans hold so dearly. Take forth the call and make a difference.
At age 2 and 9, I accompanied my parents on the Big U from NY to Southampton England and back (1960, 1967). Dad didn’t want to fly so it took about 5 days. Our last trip in a 767 took about 7 hours, but not nearly as much fun!
I doubt that our cash-strapped government can do anything but perhaps there’s enough interest in the private sector to preserve the ship. I’ve enjoyed visits to the USS Yorktown in nearby Charleston, SC and they have kept this alive as a floating museum, permanently moored at Charleston Harbor. I think this will be the only viable route for the S.S. United States.
This Past saturday,I searched the web on NCL Cruise Lines,And it listed the SS Norway as still in service.I got intrested in learning the outcome of this great icon of a great ship since the boiler explosian in Miami in May 2003.to my shocking surprise they did maintain the boilers properly and they covered up boilers with copper.they lied about repairig the Norway and they scrapped her. They could have easily coverted her to deisel + gas turbine Electrict prousion and doen the road 5 to 10 years if they decided to retire the Norway they could have taken out New deisel, gas turbine electric power plant and put into New build Cruise ship. they Could have even towed the Norway to either Norfolk,Va.or Philadelphia,Pa.And had Potts Welding and boiler Repair build new boilers for her,Potts weding is Newark Delaware. Dear SS United States Conservancy,
Another piece of our wonderful maritime architecture about to be destroyed! Just as we have done to our land architectural heritage, we are about to do again, (SS America)to the proud former representative of our nation, the SS UNITED STATES.
One can only imagine had England not scraped the historical RMS OLYMPIC (almost identical sister ship to RMS TITANIC) back in the thirties, what a gem that we would have today.
Let us all join together to save this beautiful vessel and its history. I personally can be counted on for assistance both physically and financially. Let us give this vessel a new life as it gives us a sense of pride in return for our restoration efforts.

As a little boy of ten-years, my family traveled to Germany on the SS United States. I vividly remember that during the voyage, there was an incident where we were in a horrible storm and how rough the ocean was. I also remember there were two other ocean liners behind us, one French, and one Italian. Both liners subtained heavy damage, but the SS United States got us to our destination in Germany safely. It is a beautiful ship and I have fond memories. I am sure there are many other Americans who, like me, have fond memories of this amazing ship. We should do whatever is necessesary to save it. Thank you.
