Surely, the combined interests supporting the SSUS in the US can raise the funds to buy her from Star, take her to New York, and convert her into a floating museum at South St Seaport or alongside Intrepid. She is, along with Queen Mary, the last of the original ocean liners, and should be preserved for generations to come. I wish the project every success and look forward to visiting her in New York-the home of the ocean liner.
An even more appropriate project would be to take Queen Mary to New York as well and let them rest side by side-the last holders of the Blue Riband, alongside together in the home of the ocean liner – what a sight that would be in the Big Apple.

Dear Congress:
I suggest that the first great national public work of this century should be Restoration of Our Ship of State; The S.S. United States. History has proven her to be quite frankly the most impressive and significant achievement in the history of naval engineering.
I recommend that she be militarily conscripted or commandeered. After being pressed into service due to her extraordinary wartime applications & refitted for guns, missiles, commo array & stealth technology, she may serve as Our National Flagship.
Mrs. Reagan should re-christen her the U.S.S. United States, I would recommend in a ceremony on 4 July 2009 thus, preserving the environment, stimulating the economy, providing employment, offering an alternate joint communications site, expediting military deployment, exemplifying the great American tradition of stewardship & securing the national defence.
Her fate will be symbolic of our own. As she has been laid up she has witnessed a generation of our people who have sat idly by in disgrace as we witnessed the legacy of wealth and power our fathers bequeathed us carried off by foreigners. Now the same dictatorships we choose to give a disproportionate degree of control over our lives through the pestilential plague of petroleum also carry away the great national treasure of our Ocean Liners, the very emblems of a once dominant world culture, to be scrapped. Have we no soul ? Do we not witness the greatest transferrance of wealth in human history from America to Arabia ? Do we not wish to preserve our culture and our way of life for future generations ? Why can not this one great ship, the last hope of our homeland be saved ?
Members of the house of representatives and the senate, please act now, so that her fate does not presage our own, but rather so that her life stands forever as an immutable testimony to the greatness of the American Spirit.
God save These United States and their Ship of State.
To whom it may concern: about 4 months ago I was requested for a quote to build a custom-built ship model of the SS United Staes. I purchased ships plans to build her in a 1:192 scale. A ship model 62 inches in length. I was informed that the project was turned over to someone else. I would like to be contacted in Ref: to this project. In the past I have built a ship model of the SS America and the Titanic. Thanks in Return, Arnie
