HOME MOVIES

One of the best ways to relive the glory days of the SS United States is through the home movies of passengers and crew who travelled aboard her. Click on the image at left to cross the pond with the Barol family of Philadelphia in the early '50s, set to music performed by the ship's own orchestra. Note the shots of Dr. Barol on deck with the signal flags -- this was shot just prior to the maiden voyage!

In 1975, filmmaker Robert Radler visited the ship where she was laid up at Norfolk International Terminals in Norfolk, Virginia and took extensive color slides of her exterior and interior. Click on the image to the left to see how the ship looked during layup in 1975. Thanks to Mr. Radler for kind permission to feature his photo gallery on our site.
